NJ State Certified Firefighter Training

The Firefighter 1 & 2 Program is the foundation of a firefighter's career. This NJ State certified course provides the essential knowledge and hands-on skills required to safely and effectively perform as an interior structural firefighter under NFPA 1001 standards.

Eligibility & Sponsorship
  • Must be a member of a recognized Monmouth County fire department or company, sponsored by the Fire Chief.
  • Minimum age of 18 years to participate in live fire training (must be 18 by the live burn date).
  • Members aged 16–17 may take the classroom portion under Junior Firefighter provisions but cannot participate in live fire evolutions.
Medical Clearance
  • A completed Medical Evaluation Form signed by a licensed physician is required prior to participation.
  • Students must be physically able to perform firefighting tasks while wearing full PPE and SCBA.
Attendance
  • 100% attendance is mandatory. The curriculum is cumulative and skills build session to session.
  • Missed practical sessions cannot be made up and may result in removal from the program.
⚠️ Important: Students must provide their own department-issued turnout gear (PPE) and SCBA that meet current NFPA standards. Gear will be inspected before live burn participation.
Required Equipment
  • Full structural firefighting PPE (helmet, coat, pants, boots, gloves, hood).
  • SCBA with a spare cylinder.
  • Notebook and writing materials for classroom sessions.
Certification & Examination
  • Students must pass both the written state exam and the practical skills evaluation.
  • Successful completion results in NJ Division of Fire Safety Firefighter 1 & 2 certification.

🎓 Certification Level Requested

Select the Firefighter certification level to be issued. Choose one.
Be at least 18 years of age. Successfully complete the NJ adopted Firefighter I, Hazardous Materials: Awareness, and Hazardous Materials: Operations instructional programs. Pass the Firefighter I, Hazardous Materials: Awareness, and Hazardous Materials: Operations State exams that evaluate the Job Performance Requirements (JPRs) and components of requisite knowledge and skills contained in the most current edition of the adopted NFPA 1001 and NFPA 472 standards.
Be at least 18 years of age. Possess a NJ Firefighter I, Hazardous Materials: Awareness, and Hazardous Materials: Operations certifications issued by the NJ Division of Fire Safety. Successfully complete the NJ adopted Firefighter II instructional program. Pass the Firefighter II State exams that evaluate the Job Performance Requirements (JPRs) and components of requisite knowledge and skills contained in the most current edition of the adopted NFPA 1001 standard.
About Equivalency Determinations: The equivalency determination is intended to be applied to out-of-state instructional programs accredited by ProBoard or IFSAC, or applied to a program of instruction deemed "equivalent" to the State adopted instructional program and which meets the current associated NFPA 1001 standard JPRs at time of application submittal. The program submitted for review should be consistent with the New Jersey adopted program instructional objectives and hours associated with its delivery.

👨‍🚒 Recruit Information

✅ Eligibility Requirements Recruits must be at least eighteen (18) years of age by course start date. Recruits must complete all requirements of the pre-course orientation (to be handed in on the night of orientation). Recruits must be a member of a Fire Department with proof of liability insurance. 📋 Instructions This package must be completed by the Recruit and sponsoring Department in its entirety. Include with this package a copy of the Recruit's photo documented identification (driver's license, passport, or government ID). Packages must be submitted prior to the stated deadline (5 days before the start of class). Recruits are accepted on a first come, first serve basis. Classes are limited to 32 recruits. All incomplete application packages will be rejected. No slots will be held for any Recruit or Department if an incomplete package is submitted. Departments have an option to have the student's physician complete the Medical Evaluation form, or complete the N.J. State Fireman's Association Membership Application. Out-of-county agencies will be charged a fee to enroll. No certificates will be issued without payment.

🏥 Medical Evaluation

⚠️ Physical Expectations The Firefighter Candidate will be attending an intense physically and psychologically demanding firefighter training course. Some activities the Candidate will participate in include: Wear approximately 50 pounds of personal protective equipment (PPE) including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) while performing demanding firefighting tasks. Crawl on hands and knees for distances of several hundred feet in severe heat and smoke-filled environments. Conduct fire suppression evolutions such as advancing and operating hose lines. Climb and operate from ladders at heights of 3 stories or more, execute transfers into and out of windows and onto/off roofs. Operate with hand and power tools that can cause severe injury. Conduct operations in extremes of weather for extended periods. This section must be completed by the Candidate's physician. The Medical Evaluation form will not be accepted unless filled out in its entirety. Departments may alternately submit a completed N.J. State Fireman's Association Membership Application.

Crawl on hands and knees for distances of several hundred feet in severe heat and smoke-filled environments while wearing full PPE and SCBA. Conduct fire suppression evolutions such as advancing and operating hose lines while wearing full PPE and SCBA in severe smoke and heat conditions. Climb and operate from ladders at heights of 3 stories or more and execute transfers into and out of windows and onto and off roofs. Operate with hand and power tools that can cause severe injury to the operator. Conduct operations in extremes of weather for extended periods of time.
