Purpose & Scope
The Monmouth County Sheriff's Office recognizes that social media sites including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram have become important communication channels for the community. To assist in posting content and managing these sites, the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office has developed policies and guidelines for official and personal use of social media.
These policies and guidelines apply to Monmouth County Sheriff's Office employees and members of the public who comment, post, or respond to any of the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office social media mediums.
Public comments reflect the views of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Monmouth County Sheriff's Office or its employees.
Comment Moderation
Monmouth County Sheriff's Office expects that comments and posts will be courteous and relevant to the topic(s) presented on the social media website. All comments and posts will be reviewed. The Monmouth County Sheriff's Office reserves the right to remove, hide or not publish comments.
Comments & Posts That Will Be Removed
The Monmouth County Sheriff's Office will always remove comments and posts that:
- Contain obscene or indecent language
- Contain threats, defamatory or harassing statements
- Contain hate speech directed at race, color, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, ethnicity, age, religion or disability
- Contain obscene sexual content or links to obscene sexual content
- Contain information that may compromise the safety or security of the public or public systems
- Disclose information which an agency and its employees/representatives are required to keep confidential by law or regulation
- Promote or endorse services or products
- Promote or endorse ballot issues, candidates for public office or other campaign-related material, or non-county related events and programs
- Contain unauthorized photos of employees
Individuals who violate this policy may be banned from future commenting or viewing of the social media page without notification.
Copyright & Content Usage
Copyrighted material should not be posted or submitted in any form unless permission to do so is clearly indicated. In posting comments or other material, a commenter grants Monmouth County Sheriff's Office and anyone viewing the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office social media mediums permission to copy, distribute, or display the commenter's words or photographs publicly and free-of-charge.
Response Times
We recognize that use of social media is unbound by regular business hours and comments are welcome at any time. However, given the need to manage resources, reviewing and responding to comments generally occurs during regular business hours Monday – Friday. Comments and questions submitted at other times will be reviewed and replied to as soon as possible the next business day.

What are the hours of the Sheriff's Office?
The Sheriff's Office is a 24/7 operation, but regular business hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday except for government holidays.
What is the difference between the Sheriff's Office and a police department?
The local police have primary jurisdiction and are first responders. The Sheriff's Office is responsible for courthouse security, serving criminal warrants and non-support warrants, civil process, corrections and 9-1-1 communications.
In addition, the Sheriff's Office supports and augments local police with specialized services such as K-9 narcotic & explosive detection, Search & Rescue, suspect search, bomb disposal, Emergency Response Team, and 9-1-1 dispatch, to name a few.
How was the Sheriff's position established?
The Sheriff's position was established by the New Jersey State Constitution.
How long is the Sheriff's term of office?
The Sheriff is elected to office for a term of three years.
What are the qualifications to be Sheriff?
The individual must be a U.S. citizen and a 3-year resident of the county for which he/she seeks election. A petition which contains the signatures of 100 registered voters from the party to be represented must be filed with the County Clerk.

What happens if you cannot serve my papers?
A Sheriff's Officer will make three attempts to execute the document(s), unless otherwise instructed, at which time the item will be returned to the requestor with an affidavit of service explaining the service outcome.
The fee for service is not refundable.
