Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office to Crack Down on Traffic Enforcement Through Grant

Monmouth County: The Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office will be putting the brakes on distracted drivers and those who speed, thanks to two grants provided by the New Jersey Office of Highway Traffic Safety.

“We have seen too many crashes as a result of distracted driving and speed on our roadways and these grants are vital to help ensure safety,” said Sheriff Shaun Golden. “The Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office thanks the New Jersey Office of Highway Traffic Safety for providing the funding for law enforcement agencies to enhance traffic enforcement.”

Both grants total twenty thousand dollars each and are earmarked for speed enforcement and  distracted driving enforcement. The high visibility law enforcement initiative will target motorists who engage in speeding and dangerous distracted driving behaviors, such as talking on hand-held cell phones and sending text messages while driving.

Sheriff’s Officers will be assigned to high targeted crash locations to conduct enforcement in marked, semi-marked and unmarked police vehicles beginning Feb. 1 through Sept. 30, 2021.

According to the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, nationwide, the number of people killed in distraction-affected crashes decreased from 3,450 in 2016 to 3,166 in 2017. In New Jersey, driver inattention has been a major contributing cause in nearly 800,000 motor vehicle crashes from 2012 to 2016.

The Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office remains a leader in the effort to keep drivers safe year round through distracted driving initiatives that educate motorists on the dangers of distracted driving.
